Alyth hated that someone might even be considering trying to steal her dog, but she was really glad Evander was staying with her and in her bedroom! She couldn’t wait. She took her shower, dried off, and dressed in a pair of pajama shorts and a shirt, but when she left the bathroom, she realized Evander wasn’t in the bedroom yet. She couldn’t believe it was taking that long for Skye to finish her business outside. Poor Evander.

Alyth threw on a robe and slippers and peeked out the window to the backyard. The porchlight was on outside, illuminating a good portion of the yard except for the fence in the back and the side yards. She expected to see Evander and Skye playing with the ball maybe, though she would be surprised because it was time for bed, and she was well past ready for him to join her.

Neither Skye nor Evander were in the main part of the yard. Trying not to panic, she couldn’t stop her heart from pounding like crazy. She went to the back door, opened it, and ran outside to the gate at the side of the property. Evander’s clothes were lying on the grass next to the gate. Oh, no!

She was certain Evander wouldn’t have left the yard as a wolf unless Skye had run away. She checked the lock on the gate and her worst fears were realized. The lock on the gate had been cut. Immediately, she raced back inside the house and called Ian MacNeill, since he was going to help her with this situation if it was a case of attempted dog napping.

“Hi, it’s Alyth. Evander took Skye out into the backyard, but they’ve run off. He’s running as a wolf, and the lock to the gate had been cut.”

“I’m calling up the troops and on my way.”

“I’m going after them as a wolf,” she said, kicking off her slippers, yanking off her robe, pulling off her pajama top, and then her shorts in the living room. “I’m off to find them.” She locked the back door. She wasn’t hanging around here when she might be able to help Evander catch Skye.

“All right. We’re on our way over there.” Then Ian ended the call.

She was glad he hadn’t suggested that she stay at the house because she had no intention of doing it. She had to find Skye and Evander. If they were in trouble, she wanted to help them out.

She set her phone down on the kitchen table. Then she shifted into her wolf and dove through the wolf door and followed the scents of both Evander and Skye. She glanced in the direction of the bakery, looking to see if the red car was there, but not really expecting it to be. If they had been waiting for Skye, then when she was gone, they would have gone after her. If they had seen Skye tear off, what would they have thought of a wolf chasing after her?

They probably would assume Evander was a German shepherd though.
